Soil Flashcards
Mechanical weathering
Breakdown of rock into smaller pieces by physical means
Abrasion
Rocks and sediment grinding against eachother and wearing away exposed surfaces.
Chemical weathering
Chemical breakdown of rocks and minerals Into a new substance
Acid precipitation
Precipitation that contains acids due to air pollution
Oxidation
Chemical reaction to which an element combines with oxygen to form an oxide
Different weathering
The process which softer less weathering resistant rocks wear away, leaving harder, more resistant rocks behind.
Soil
Loose mixture of small mineral fragments and organic matter.
Bedrock
The layer of rock beneath soil.
Parent rock
Rock that is a source of soil
Humus
Very small particles of decayed plant and animal material in soil.
Topsoil
The top layer of soil that fontina humus
Leaching
The process by which rainwater dissolves and carries away the minerals and nutrients in topsoil.
Soil conservation
The various methods. By which humans take care of soil.
Weathering
Breakdown of Rock into smaller and smaller pieces.
Erosion
The removal of transport of material by wind water or ice.
