03-03-092 Hydrogen Cyanide (HCN) Monitoring
What is the IDLH and STEL (15 min TWA) of HCN? Acute exposure symptoms at 5-10 PPM? 25-50 PPM? Fatal at?
- IDLH 50 PPM
- STEL 4.7 PPM
- Half-life 1 hour
- 5-10 PPM - weakness, headache, confusion, vertigo, fatigue, anxiety, dyspnea, occasionally nausea and comiting
- 25-50 ppm - resp. Distress, convulsions/coma, unconscious, coma, etc
- fatal at:
135 ppm after 30 min
181 ppm after 10 min
270 ppm after 6-8 min
03-03-092 HCN Monitoring
HCN monitoring shall be conducted during the following conditions (4):
- all structure fires
- vehicle fires in a structure or parking garage
- cooking fires where there is damage to the container and the surrounding area
- all smoke investigation or unknown odour incidents

There are basically 4 different methods of handling haz mat spills or leaks, they are:
CANS
- Absorption

03-03-089 Haz mat incidents
A fire in any of the following materials should signal a non-attack posture and immediate evacuation of the surrounding area:
EEOO
- Explosives A
- Explosives B
- Oxidizers
- Organic peroxides
03-08-001 SCBA and Resporatory Protection Program
SCBA users should do both the visual and functional tests for for SCBA (when?):
- at the beginning of each shift
- upon receipt of a replacement SCBA
- after every use
03-08-038 Personal Protective Equipment
When shall PPE be inspected?
When shall Captain inspect?
PPE shall be inspected at the beginning of each shift or after possible exposure to damaging agents.
The Captain shall inspect PPE on a semi-annual basis and after each use.
All issued PPE shall be inspected by suppression personnel and their supervisor on the Monday shift (or next shift if absent)

All fires shall be investigated to determine the cause and origin.

03-02-059 Fire Investigations
When do you notify the OFMEM?
- Notify at the discretion of the DC in consultation with fire inspector forthwith via the PEOC
- will respond 24/7 for a fatal fire, serious injuries, explosions and all fires in vulnerable occupancies (?) as set out in directive
