Application Software
a program or group of programs designed for end users. These programs are divided into two classes: system software and application software.
System Software
a type of computer program that is designed to run a computer’s hardware and application programs.
Open Source Software
is computer software with its source code made available with a license in which the copyright holder provides the rights to study, change, and distribute the software to anyone and for any purpose.
Freeware
software that is available free of charge.
Shareware
software that is available free of charge and often distributed informally for evaluation, after which a fee may be requested for continued use.
Cookies
A small text file created by a Web site that is stored in the user’s computer either temporarily for that session only or permanently on the hard disk
Defragmentation (defrag)
the process of locating the noncontiguous fragments of data into which a computer file may be divided as it is stored on a hard disk, and rearranging the fragments and restoring them into fewer fragments or into the whole file.
Spyware
software that enables a user to obtain covert information about another’s computer activities by transmitting data covertly from their hard drive.
Virus
is a type of malicious software program (“malware”) that, when executed, replicates by reproducing itself (copying its own source code) or infecting other computer programs by modifying them. Infecting computer programs can include as well, data files, or the “boot” sector of the hard drive.
Malware
‘Malware’ is an umbrella term used to refer to a variety of forms of hostile or intrusive software, including computer viruses, and other malicious programs. It can take the form of executable code, scripts, active content, and other software.
