Set of instructions which hardware follow in order to preform a task

Swap file: area of the hard disk used for virtual memory

Buffer: segment of the memory where items are placed while waiting to be transferred
Spooling: send files to a buffer instead of the printer immediately
Documents line up in a queue in the buffer
Configuring devices
Devices driver: small program that tells the OS how to communicate with a device
Plug and play: gives the computer the capability to recognize peripherals as you install them

Bugs: errors in programs
Service pack: free downloadable updates provided by the makers for users
Types of operating systems
Stand alone (complete operating system that works on a computer (desktop or mobile: ex Mac OS )
Server (designed specifically to support a network ex windows server)
Embedded (designed to work on mobile devices and many electronics ex google android, iPhone os )
Utility program: File manager
Tool to perform functions related to file management: display list of file, organize files in folders, copy, rename, move and sort files
Utility program:search
Program that attempts to locate a file, contact, event, or any other item stored based on criteria: word, location, date
Utility program: image viewer
Tool that allows viewer to display, copy and print a picture
Many include photo editing capabilities
Utility program : uninstaller
Tool that removes a program in the system file
Deletes files and folders as well as program entries
Utility program : disk cleanup
Tool that searches for and removes unnecessary files
These may include: program files, deleted files, unused program files
Utility program: screen saver
Tool that shows a moving image or blank screen if no activity occurs for a specific time
Utility program: file compression
Tool that shrinks the size of the file.
Compressed files take up less storage space.
It is used to : tif in storage media, attach to an email, upload a file
Shareware
Shareware is software that is given away for free with the understanding that the user will eventually need r want to pay for it
Public domain
Anyone can freely copy, share, edit and republish anything that is in the public domain since it is not protected by any other copy right laws or restrictions
Freeware
Freeware is a type of small application that may be downloaded and used on most operating systems for free
Commercial software
Any software or program that is created and produced for license or sale to end users, or that has a commercial function
Copyright
The exclusive legal right to copy, publish, sell, distribute something’s content and form
Multi user licence
A multi user operating system is a license that allows you to install a program onto multiple computers used by multiple users
Site license
A site license is a sort of software license that allows a user to install a software package on multiple computers at the same time, such as at a single location or throughout an entire company
Single user licence
Is a type of system that can be only be installed in one computer and only used by one person at a time
