Hardest positions in softball
Shortstop, center fielder, catcher, and pitcher
Pitcher
throws the ball
Catcher
catches pitches behind the hitter, calls pitches
First baseman
tagging runners before they reach first base, catching throws from infielders, following runners to second base, catching ground balls near them
Second baseman
catching balls at second base, fielding ground balls and fly balls, and receiving throws from outfield, help the first baseman and throw balls to the pitcher
Third baseman (after shortstop)
Don’t have to move as much as shortstop or second base.
Shortstop
between second and third base, responsible for balls that end up in area and balls hit up the middle, responsible for communicating with other infielders and taking charge of balls hit in the air
Right fielder
On the right in the outfield, catching balls and throwing them to the bases
Central fielder
In the center of the outfield. Most demanding field position.
Left fielder
On the left side of the outfield. Sometimes lesser player because fewer balls are hit in that direction.
