Soft tissue injuries Flashcards
Strain- what is it an injury of
- injury to muscle-tendon unit
- classified into 3 categories
Sprain- what is it an injury to and what is the grading based on(2)
- injury to the ligament beyond their elastic limit
based on:
1- number of fibres disrupted
2- instability of joint
What are contusions and what is the result
- caused by a direct blow to the muscle belly
- causes capillary rupture and ecchymosis (discoloration of the skin)
what is a minor injury defined as in ontario
1st or 2nd degree strains, sprains and contusions
Tendonitis (acute and chronic)
-refers to injury and inflammation of the tendonis portion of MT unit
acute- only localized due to microscopic tears
chronic- tears in tissue may grow together causing complete disruption
Heatoma and what is it a contraindication of
localized collection of extravasterated blood, usually clotted
-contraindication of ultrasound, heat and deep massage
Myositis Ossificans (what is it a result of)
Occurs when extravasated blood has an affinity for periosteal surfaces. Osteoclastic activity within the blood results in spurs (result of severe contusion)
Myosynovitis
-inflamtion of the muscle sheath w paina and creeking
Tenosynovitis
lesion of the gliding surfaces of the external aspect of a tendon and internal aspect of tendon sheeth
Guidlines for return to comp for athletes
- no pain
- equal length
- equal strength
- equal strength ratios between opposing m
- equal girth
- equal rom
- equal joint play
What is the demarlis table
related the length of time a body segment is immobalized and the time it takes to recover the active rom in that joint
what is the most valid way to assess for a foot/ankle fracture and what is the most important characteristics
- Ottawa ankle rules
- weight bearing status is the most important characteristic (and bony tenderness)
