Specific name for the mitzvot ‘not to destroy or waste’
This follows the deontological ethical framework as Jewish adherents follow their duty
What is Gemilut Khasadim?
translates to ‘acts of loving kindness’
adherents must take physical action to be goo to others
What is tikkun olam?
translates to ‘repairing the world’
What is the eightfold path?
A set of 8 principles
Right action and right mindfulness
Right mindfulness: be mindful of the way you impact the world and environment
right action: take action to help the environment and alleviate suffering
what are the 5 precepts?
A set of ethical guidelines for Buddhist adherents to follow.
Should abstain from taking like (includes plant)
Should abstain from taking what is not given to them
what is karma?
Idea of karma is teleology. It is the consequences of your actions, so make good choices
Differences WITHIN Judaism?
FOR GEMILUT KHASADIM
Orthodox: take it literally. Might do it in an instant, help an injured animal.
Reform: focus on large-scale solutions like recycling.
Differences WITHIN Buddhism?
FOR KARMA
Mahayana and Theravada have no differences in approach towards environment
Theravada might aim to escape Samsara
Mahayana Buddhists accept that Buddha is the only one to have done so, and focus instead on alleviating the suffering
Double check this is right
Linear vs Cyclical?
Reunite with god in death
Achieve a favourable reincarnation in their next life
Sacred texts vs None?
○ Genesis states that God gave man dominion over the earth. It is their duty to care for it.
○ Buddha has no specific teachings about environment. But Buddhism is largely progressive and adapt teachings to contemporary issues
