Pregnancy

A

MHRA: Valproate medicines (Epilim, Depakote) contraindicated in women of child-bearing ages unless in Pregnancy Prevention Programme and NO other alternative. Contraindicated in pregnant women with bipolar disorder and only used if NO alternative

Consult GP immediately if pregnant / planning

Specialist supervision
7 day prescription validity, 30 day supply
Use highly effective contraception
1. IUD, POP implant, sterilization
2. x2 methods COC + barrier + reg pregnancy testing
Exclude pregnancy before treatment
Fully informed patient info -signed risk acknowledgement form and annual review

Side effects

A
  1. Hepatotoxicity (FATAL)- report persistent vomiting, abdo pain, jaundice, malaise, drowsiness. Discontinue if abnormally prolonged PROTHROMBIN TIME
    * Monitor LFTs
  2. Blood dyscrasias e.g. leucopenia, thrombocytopenia. Report infections signs
    * MONITOR FBC
  3. Pancreatitis - report abdo pain, nausea, vomiting
