20
Q

What are the steps of the elenchus ?

A

1) An individual would assert a statement that Socrates would refute. Or ask them a question about it

2) once they provide their answer. Socrates would think of a scenario where the persons answer would not be the case. Asking them to assume the original statement was false.

3) the other person would agree with this claim. Socrates would then change the statement to agree with this exception to the rule.

4) Socrates proves that the original statement is false, and the negation Is in fact true.

The individual would keep changing their answer and the cycle would repeat until you got closer to the actual truth.
