Social Stratification
The ranking of people and the rewards they receive based on an objective criteria, often including wealth, power, and/or prestige.
Entitlement Program
A program offering assistance to which a person is entitled, requiring no qualification
Jim notices that when he goes to work that all of his friends drive nice trucks or have some type of luxury car, where he is stuck with a beater car and that makes him think he is poor.
This is an example of relative poverty because Jim is comparing what he has to what his friends have.
Wanda recently got promoted from a cashier to a managerial position at Festival Foods. She will now receive a 40% increase on her salary, along with many more hours.
This is an example of social mobility because Wanda has the ability to move up from the poor class to the middle class.
Upper/Elite Class
A social class that is very small in number and holds significant wealth.
Intergenerational Mobility
Refers to the change that family members make from one social class to the next through generations.
Lower Class
A social class that is living in poverty
Meritocracy Argument
States that those who go ahead do so based on their own merit
Ally lost her job from getting laid off, and is now looking for work
Transitional Poverty
Megan has a high school diploma and college credits, she owns some property but hold much less wealth
Middle Class
Due to the stock market crash, many lost jobs and are now unemployed
Structural Mobility
Wealth
All material possessions, including income.
Upper/Elite Class
A social class that is very small in number and holds significant wealth.
Intragenerational Mobility
Occurs when an individual changes social standing, especially in the workforce.
TANF
(Temporary Assistance to Needy Families) an ongoing government program that targets a particular section of population to receive benefits such as cash assistance and childcare.
Jobs such as College Professors and Police Officers
