What is culture?
A shared way of life of a group of people in society. E.g someone’s culture is made up of food, language or clothing worn at home.
What is cultural relativity?
The idea that what is normal in one culture is different in another.
What is cultural universal?
Social behaviours that can be found in all cultures.
What are norms?
Unwritten rules of society. E.g eating with a knife and fork is the norm in England but not in all cultures.
What are values?
Refers to what is seen as worthwhile in society. E.g good health and education.
What are morals?
Ideas about whether actions are right or wrong. E.g murder is morally wrong
What are roles?
Expected behaviour of a person or group in society. E.g doctors have a code of dress and how to treat patients.
What are role models?
A person or group of people who are looked up to by others.
What is status?
Your position in society. There are two types: ascribed and achieved. Ascribed= Status is given to you at birth, e.g the king. Achieved= Status is earnt based on merit, e.g choosing a university degree.
What is identity?
How we see ourselves and how others see us. E.g DR CAGES.
Disability, religion, class, age, gender,ethnicity, sexuality.
