What does sociology of of education examine?
Examines the function of education within broader social structures
Focused on aggregates, with an interest in society or community as its focus
What is the concept of functionalism?
Schools are like factories, students are raw products that need to be shaped into products that meet the various demands of life
It is the schools job to build its students according to the specifications laid out
What is the concept of placement?
Discovering what each individuals are good at and assigning the work which they were meant to do and fit in
What is the training concept
schools are socialization agencies that teach children how to get along with others & prepare them for adult economic roles
What is the socialization concept?
society survives when there is homogeneity among its members. This homogeneity is reinforced by education that fixes in the child the essential similarities from the beginning which collective life demands
what is perennialism?
Transmitting eternal & universal truths
What is essentialisms?
Replicating cultural knowledge & practices
Why education reduces crime?
Incapacitation - school limits the opportunity to commit crime bc one cannot be in 2 places at one
Employment prospects - schooling raises opportunity cost of crime. Higher wages reduce crime
Risk Aversion - Education makes individuals more risk averse
Social interaction - Pos peer pressure disincentive on criminal activity
What is the health benefit to education?
More educated individuals, the better their physical health
What was the Perry Preschool project?
Provided preschool education to 64 students living in poverty & assessed to be at high risk of school failure
What is the locally developed/essentials program?
Helps students get compulsory credit requirements
Prepares students to leave HS and secure a job
What is the achievement gap?
The disparity in achievement between groups of students ethnicity, religion, class, gender, nationality
What is the reproduction theory?
Black girls are more likely to be disciplined for subjective infractions & recieve harsher punishments
What is teaching concerned with?
