What is society?
a group of people who share the same culture who live in the same area and feel apart of that group.
What is culture?
skills, language, knowledge, norms and values of a society which we learn from those around us.
What is a subculture?
a group of people who have different norms and values than mainstream society.
What are social norms?
social rules, expectations or standards that govern behaviour in a particular situation.
What are values?
ideas or beliefs about goals or general principles a society should be based on. They tell us what is good and important about life and what to aim for.
What is primary socialisation?
socialisation that takes place during childhood usually within the family. First stage of passing down society to the young.
What is secondary socialisation?
learning of culture that takes place outside of the famil and in wider society including teachers, peers and the media.
What is status?
a person’s position within society eg their occupational status.
What is a role?
a set of norms which defines appropriate behaviour for a particular status, eg if you are a Dr there will be certain expectations for that role.
What is social control?
methods designed to ensure members of society conform to an approved way of behaving.
Give an example: informal social control
religion which offers a guide on how to behave and in reward is the promise of a good afterlife.
Give an example: formal social control:
the legal system which has laws in place that we must abide to and the consequence of not doing so is a formal punishment eg fine or prison sentence.
