Globalisation has taken a strong hold of economy, technology, culture and politics…it’s an interconnected world.technology has blurred the boundaries, multinational companies.
Complex changes began with Trade Routes, Exploration and Colonisation all occurring for a long time. Supra nations: United Nations, NATO , the world bank, G8 etc.
Global brands ie. Mac Donald’s :: MacDonaldization …Ritzer. Capitalism. (Predictable, same, cloned, cheap food)
Efficiency:Calculability: Predictability: Control.

Usually pretty stable relationship, stay in places.
Outline the course theme difference and divisions
Different types of social groups, cultures and sub-cultures.
Dependant on SES (socioeconomic status) of group. Cultural aspects effect groups behaviour. Class…. Still a Featureof modern society structure.
We all belong to lots of groups or classes egg. White, married, female, mother, daughter, wife, sister, parent, student, worker, blue eyed…..
ASCRIBED: not earned… A social position given to you @ birth by your family.
ACHIEVED: position you achieve by own merit….meritocracy. Earned.
**Some group Differences get reproduced as social Divisions. The social division does NOT see the positive interesting variation, but INEQUALITY.
The dominant group sees themselves as superior.
Media has huge influence on perspectives:-
X2 photos… Identical, white people , “homeless, searching for food”
Or black people, “looting is rife’
Differences in social and cultural behaviour can result in divisions.
Outline the general features of the course theme social and personal
Extends C Wright Mills ‘sociological imagination’. Contrast between personal issue which could also be a public issue. All of us individual & unique, shaped by our own social setting and social role. We are all part of a group of social traits not just individual characteristics. Family, schools etc socialise us…acc to the values, rules and identity of the social group. Personal relates to social varies across cultures. Cultural values constantly changing and adapting to modern times.
B.Use your course theme to outline some aspect of the sociology of food.
Eating is a cultural universal….we all eat.
Globalisation is a large scale social process making it easy to transport any types of fruit or vegetable around the world.
With the diversity of cultures living in any one country, the variety is limitless.Standardised and homogenised food production which effectively limits the choices available has spread globally.
Rationalisation or the term McDonaldisation (Gerorge Ritzer ) is an example of the way in which take away, fast food from America, a 1st world, core or developed country has become a standardised model of food production. Efficiency, Calculability, Predictability, and Control. ECPC. It brings control over uncertainty as most parts of the world now have a MacDonalds serving identical cheap fast food.

Globalisation of the world leads to local communities often constructed from many different migrant people’s.
Transnationalism is a term which relates to activities which increase links or connections between groups living in different countries.
Diaspora relates to ethnic groups from a country living outside their original homeland. Both transnationalism and diaspora are increasing with more and more movement around the globe. World population data shows unprecedented growth shifting to the poorest of the developing countries.
