What are internal factors to be considered?
labelling, pupil identities, pupil subcultures, institutional racism
What is labelling?
attaching a meaning or definition to a person, which may lead to self fulfilling prophecy.
ARCHER pupil identities, subcultures and responses
ARCHER thinks that a teachers way of seeing something defines and constructs 3 types of ethnic minorities pupil identities. These include the ideal pupil, pathologies pupil and demonised pupil.

a white m/c masculine identity with a normal sexuality, this pupil achieves in the right way through natural ability.

an asian feminine identity, a cultural bound over achiever and achieves through hard work not natural.

a white or black w/c unintelligent, peer led, culturally deprived under achiever.
GILBOURN// Black pupils and discipline
they think that school is institutionally racist and have racialised expectations. Also teachers have bad expectations of black Caribbean students, they expect them to have behaviour problems so they are focused on control and punishment over academic achievement eg. lower sets.

The conflicted comes from the teachers racial stereotypes not pupils actual behaviour.
WRIGHT// Asian pupils
teachers expect that asian pupils will have a bad grasp of English, therefore these students are often left out of class discussions and overall ignored.

study on year 11 black girls who channelled their anger towards negative labels to achieve academically.
