Social Group
Expressive Relationship vs. Instrumental Relationship
Expressive = Relationship with deep emotional significance
Instrumental = Relationship designed to achieve significant goals.
Ingroup vs Outgroup
Ingroup = Person identifies with this group
Outgroup = Person does not identify with this group
Material or symbolic devices that identify who is inside or outside a group.
Social Boundaries
Relative Gratification vs. Relative Deprivation
When compared to status of those of lower social standing…
Gratification = Satisfaction
Deprivation = Dissatisfaction
Dyads vs. Triads
Dyad = Group consisting of two people
Triad = Group consisting of three people
Reduction in efforts or assistance to the group
Social Loafing
When one individual directs group interaction more than other members.
Leadership
Authoritarian vs. Democratic vs. Laissez Faire
Auth. = Leaders give orders, with minimal input from followers
Dem = Does not force ideals
LF = Decisions left up to the group, with no direction
Individuals must conform to the group’s opinions and expectations.
Conformity
Primary vs. Secondary Group
Primary = Together because they value one another
Secondary = Together because they try to accomplish a goal
People take greater risks in groups than they would when alone
