Nakamura (2011)

A

Feminist
Women from a range of ethnicities are gaining an increasing presence in digital communication and this enables their particular interests. For instance, there are support networks for women who might have previously not been able to have that support. The networks offer practical and emotional support for women experiencing discrimination.

Q

Hughes, 1991

A

Feminist
New forms of digital communication offer new ways in which women, children and vulnerable people can be exploited.

Apart from slavery, feminists also point out the ways in which digital communication can increase patriarchal control over women. These include sexual exploitation, such as bride trafficking, sex tourism, exchange of prostitution information and live sex shows.

Q

Collins (2005)

A

Suggests that to understand society, the chains of interaction must be understood. By looking closely at how individuals construct their identities on social network sites, it may be possible to learn about people’s perspective of the world. It is interesting to consider the difference in peoples on- and offline lives.
The TV series, Catfish, shows stories of people hoping for love but being catfished, often with mysteries and surprises.

17
Q

Case (2007)

A

Suggests that the fact that effects of social media need to be researched over the coming years before any definitive conclusions can be drawn can prove a challenge.
This is especially the case for adolescents who in effect have two adolescents- one online and one offline. She claims that the nature of new social media makes it harder to remove mistakes as every interaction is visible, like an audit trail.
For instance, many people don’t realise that much of what they say is stored by social media companies and is hard to remove or edit.
This can cause tension and conflict between individuals, for example, resulting in disputes due to the disclosure of private information.

18
Q

Baudrillard

A

20
Q

Foucault (1977)

A

Poststructuralist
Argues that surveillance is likely to become the most effective means of regulating behaviour and reducing crime in contemporary society
According to Foucault, a person who knows that they are being watched is less likely to commit a crime as their chances of being caught are greater.
