Intro
- Social class can be defined as the divisions in society based on economic and social status, where people in the same social class typically share a similar level of wealth, educational achievement, type of job and income.
- Proven that MC are consistently outperforming Wc class mates
- Sociologists have devised some explanations for this division in terms of internal factors: labelling, streaming and external factors: material and cultural dep, parental attitudes.
PARA 1 - MATERIAL DEP
P - Material deprivations
E - Bull (1980) ‘costs of free schooling’
E - Study by Tanner et al - cost of items such as transport, uniform, books etc. place heavy burden on poorer families - hand me downs, unfashionable - bullying, isolated by peers - not want to go school - underachieve
E - However, some schools, such as academies, receive external funding to provide free resources - reducing financial barriers - achievement.

P - Subcultures
E - Sugarman (1970) Fatalism
E - Fate is set, can’t achieve through meritocratic efforts - giving up - Mc not willing to work harder - in order to be successful need to work hard yourself - believe they are ‘doomed’ - underachieve.
E - However, victim blaming - WC class pupils culturally deprived rather than culturally different - education system take responsibility to change to adapt for all - rather than biased.
