Sociological Concepts/definitions Flashcards
Discuss the different sociological concepts and what they endure
What is informal social control?
A similar process to formal social control, except it occurs amongst social groups rather than governments and authorities. Manipulation of different individuals by peers or family members take place in order for them to behave a specific way or conform to a specific subculture to meet their needs
What are norms?
A social construct whereby social expectations are created, guiding individuals behaviour, explaining why people do what they do in certain situations. They can change and vary in specific cultures and develop as we grow as a society
What are values?
Important or lasting believes shared by members of a culture about what is good, bad, desirable and undesirable. They have major influences on our actions and behaviour as they serve as guidelines in all situations. Like norms, they vary across cultures and change as our society develops.
Explain the process of socialisation?
It is a gradual, continuing process whereby individuals acquire personal identities and learn norms, values, behaviours and social skills appropriate for their social position. This takes a long time because it involves learning to behave in a way deemed acceptable in society, which begins from a young age.
What is formal social control
A sociological process in which manipulation of societies occur in order to keep individuals behaving the way expected. External sanctions are enforced by the government in order to prevent an outbreak of chaos.
