Style (as a social resource)
A way of doing something
A way of speaking
The most useful concept in answering questions around identity in sociolinguistics
Social identity
Gives salience to perceived similarities with fellow group members, in comparison with other groups.
It is a self categorisation in which intra-group differences are perceived to be smaller than inter-group differences
Personal Identity
A self definition that gives salience to the perceived difference between oneself and other people in a group. It suggests a perception of the self as ‘me’ and of the others in a group as ‘not me’ and represents a categorisation in which intragroup (interpersonal) differences are perceived to be greater than inter group differences
Crossing
Involves speakers using short stretches of the inauthentic variety, such as swear words and insults, greetings, word plays and set expression.
