SOCIOAPP - Fagot (1978) Flashcards
aim
the role that parents may play in gender-role development.
what type of observation - overt? naturalistic?
overt naturalistic observation
studying/observing the behavior of participants in natural surroundings.
evaluation
high ecological validity - naturalistic enviroment
findings
Parents reacted significantly more favorably to the child when the child was engaged in same-sex preferred behavior;
children were more likely to receive negative responses to cross-sex-preferred (mix girls and boys) behaviors.
Parents gave girls more positive responses when they engaged in adult-oriented, dependent behaviour
acted positively when a girl asked for help (rather than a boy)
This suggests that the parents were not fully aware of the methods they use to socialize their children.
evaluation
sampling bias
The study suffers from sampling bias. The families were all linked to the university, they were all white and they were all American. In addition, 24 families is a very small sample.
generalising is limited
The ability to generalize from this sample is limited.
