Socio Week 2 Flashcards
What are the two types of thinking?
- Quick and automatic without considering much
- Controlled and effortful thinking pausing to consider things
Type 1 thinking occurs both through
- Skill acquisition = driving a car
- Preconscious processing - where encoding takes place without awareness
What happens when one practices acts of self-control in one area of one’s life?
It deplete another controlled resource in another area (Baumeister et al., 1998)
What is the perception-behaviour link?
The Perception behaviour link states that mental content is generated after one perceives their surrounding social environment increases the likelihood of performing similar behaviours
What are examples of how priming can influence the likelihood of behaviour?
Unconscious mimicry in response to their social environment, probably done for pro-social behaviour
Mirror neurons occur both when the person acts and when they observe it in another person, linked to empathy and language
What 3 factors affect the accessibility of schemas?
- Cultural context
- Personal experience
- Recent priming
How does impression formation enhance memory?
Impression formation of someone else’s behaviour leads to a better memory and better organisation of that information compared to those asked to memorise the goal
How is impression formation primed both explicitly and implicity?
- Implicit - priming
- Explicit - instruction
Both have enhanced effect for memory
How does enhanced mood improve performance? And how is it primed?
Participants primed with positive outcomes related to success “language including the words strive/succeed” did better on tasks compared to participants primed with neutral language
What does the Wegner and Wheatley (2002) computer mouse task suggest?
That conscious will is an experience/perception but we are more guided by our recent priming, subconscious language, schemas and mood
