Define refugee
A
someone fleeing conflict or persecution + has been granted protection from another country
this is legally and internationally recognised

Define asylum seekers
A
someone who has fled their country and applied for refugee status elsewhere

Define undocumented migrant
A
someone who doesn’t fulfill the requirements of a country to be legally allowed to stay

What are the key points regarding a migrant’s entitlement to NHS care?
A
- primary care (GP) is free for everyone irrespective of immigrant status
- anyone can register with a GP - do not need proof of address/identity
- A&E care is free for everyone
- secondary care is only free for refugees + asylum seekers with an active application
- refused asylum seekers cannot get free secondary care
- special circumstances = certain infectious diseases (e.g. TB, HIV) + victims of particular crimes (e.g. torture, FGM)
