What is society
A group of people with common territory, interaction and culture. Members of a society come in contact with eachother and share aspects of their cultures
What is pluralism
People of different cultures living side by side in one society rather than blending into one culture they keep unique traditions
What is definiton of law
Body of rules issued by legally sanctioned entities and enforced by sanctioned authorities
Law as a social control mechanism
Formal- Includes organisations or systems that use strict rules and values that we are commonly made to obey. (Dangerous Dogs Act 2023)
Informal- relies on public and peer opinions to ensure compliance to dominant values
What is the consensus theory
Instituions of society are working together to maintain social cohesion and stability Durkeim believed in collective conscience. Social norms agreed
What is conflict theory
Karl Max- society in state of perpetual conflict disagreement in society. Social order maintained by dominance and power.
What is labelling theory
Howard Saul Becker- law creates deviant individuals and sections of society by attaching social stigma
What are different types of realists
Right realists - strong informal controls are the most effective way of maintaining order in society
Left realists- education and rehab are most effective way of maintaining order in society
Legal realism- law not what is written books but rather everyday practice in the courts as scoiety changes quicker
What is moral panic
Sudden concern over a issue in scoiety. News media and public officails are key in focusing attention on the issue or amplify it Dangerous Dogs Act 2023
