What is a society?
A group of people from the same geographical area who share the same laws and values eg. religion and culture
What is a pluralistic society?
Different groups of people with different views that are tolerated by everyone
What does Lord Bingham say are the 4 main roles of society?
To protect from harm
Ensure common good
Settle arguments and disputes
Persuade people to do the right thing
What is civil disobedience?
When a disobedient act such as a protest changes a law or moral within society
What is a successful example of civil disobedience?
Gay rights activists protesting to change the age of consent- worked
What is media sensationalism and who is the theorist
Stanley Cohen and when a small sector is seen as a threat and the media creates panic for everyone
What is an unsuccessful example of civil disobedience?
Protests in Toxeth to change police power but it gave police more power
Example of media sensationalism
Dangerous Dogs Act 1991- banned dangerous dogs following many dog attacks
Sarah’s Law- allows people to find out information about people on the sex offenders register
What is a formal agency of social control?
Police, judges
What is an informal agency of social control?
Family, communities
What did Roscoe Pound say?
Human nature requires social control and conflicting interests must be balanced to create harmony
Examples of law as social control in criminal law
Consent can be a complete defence to balance the interests of freedom eg. Brown and Wilson
Examples of law as social control in tort law
the courts balance interests of the claimant and defendant eg. Robinson v CCWYP
What is the consensus theory and who is the theorist?
People are socialised into shared norms and values and people are in agreement about what society needs- Durkheim
What is the conflict theory and who is the theorist?
Society is in constant conflict and society is dominated by those in power (richer people surpassing the poor)- Marx
