Introduction - Argument
One Nation and Traditional conservatives are united in some areas, however, New Right are completely disunited when it comes to their view of society. This means conservatives are more disunited than united
Paternalism - Agree - Point
All conservatives acknowledge that the ineqalities within human nature, in turn, lead to an unequal society in which there is a heirarchy of power and privilege. Thus, One Nation and Traditional conservatives are keen to stress the importance of paternalism
Paternalism - Disagree - Point
- Traditional conservatives tend to take the stance of hard paternalism which involves the elitre deciding what is best for the rest
- One Nation conservatives tend to act on soft paternalism where elites decisions are preceeded by listening to the non-elites
Paternalism - Disagree - Example
(Traditional)
Hobbs claimed that the state had to be autocratic, if power was dispersed, he argued, the confluect within the state of nature would be replicated
Paternalism - Disagree - Example
(One Nation)
Soft Paternalism is what we have in Britain today - Brexit Referendum is a good example
Tradition and Empricism - Agree - Point
They untied around the argument that society relies heavily upon the store it sets by tradition. Customs and habits are thus used to provide security in an uncertain world, with history and experience shaping whatever changes are necessary
Tradition and Empricism - Agree - Example
Oakshott observed ‘society’s present direction stems from its past developments’
Traditional and Empricism - Disagree - Point
- Traditional and One Nation conservatives are strong believers of empricism meaning they have no clear view of how society might evolve
- New Right conservatives stress the importance of planning, especially when it comes to the economy
Tradition and Empricism - Disagree - Example
(One Nation)
Oakshott observed that conservative society is one that merely aims to ‘stay afloat’ in uncertain waters, rather than sail steadily towards a specific direction
Tradition and Empricism - Disagree - Example
(New Right)
Liz Truss unvailed an autumn mini budget in September 2022 which included secific economic growth and progression aims
Individualism - Agree - Point
There is agreement between conservatives that human nature has led us to formulate a community and that society is compromised on communities
Individualism - Disagree - Point
- Traditional conservatives argue that these communities make up our society and are important in breaking the selfish nature of humans
- New Right conservatives differ in that they are ambivalent about society’s very existence, rather they see it as a collection of individuals
Individualism - Disagree - Example
(Traditional)
Burke described society as a collection of ‘little plattons’ with each of these ‘platoons’ providing their indivduals with security, status and inspiration
Indivudualism - Disagree - Example
(New Right)
Ayn Rand said that is was talent individuals which lay at the heart of any successful society. Rand is associated with atomism - society is defined by millions of autonomous individuals, each independently seeking self-fulfilment
