Socially Sensitive Research Flashcards
What is socially sensitive research?
Any research that might have direct social consequences for the participants in the research or the group that they represent e.g leading to discrimination of prejudice
What are some ways of dealing with socially sensitive research?
. Recognise potential for misuse of research findings (media representation)
. Carefully formulate research questions to avoid bias (e.g with Milgram’s question)
. Be alert to possible misinterpretations
Is socially sensitive research important?
Yes, just because it is sensitive doesn’t mean it shouldn’t be conducted. Aronson (1999) stated that psychologists have a ‘social responsibility’ to conduct this kind of research in an attempt to get rid of any prejudices or stereotypes
