What influences behaviour?
Social influence is the effect of other people on a person’s thoughts and actions directly or indirectly.
What are social institutions?
An organization & social framework whose function is to meet the basic needs of its members by providing direction and operating principles for society
It is comprised of a group or organization that has specific roles, norms, and expectations which functions to meet the social needs of society
What are examples of social institutions?
Family, Religion, Education, Government, Economy, Jail/Law enforcement, Healthcare, Welfare
How is the economy a social institution?
The economy allows people to trade good and services
Economy allows society to develop through fast and easy transaction systems
Structured economy should work towards narrowing the economic disparities between groups of people
How is religion a social institution?
Religion is a social institution because it connects back to the beliefs and values of society
Religious figures and places are worship are the representation of religious systems
Core beliefs- morals and values. Religion teaches people about how to be a working person within a community
How is education a social institution?
Core beliefs: knowledge and understanding about the world and society, characteristics of good leaders, significance of equality and equity, and moral and ethics
Education provides us guidance and direction, education and knowledge helps create relationships and sense of belonging
Most important because it helps build foundational skills such as communication, social, literacy and numeracy skills, etc
Helps us understand our roles in society
How is family a social institution?
Core beliefs- varies depending on the culture and traditions, personal values, etc
General beliefs: family is a basic unit in society, sources of love and support, expected to offer material and emotional supports, a place of socialization, responsible for raising and educating children
Provides support and guidance through our lives through things like physical needs (food, shelter, clothing, etc), emotional needs (sense of security and belonging, etc), social needs (social skills, how to interact with others, etc), gives us a sense of identity
How is the government a social institution?
Core beliefs- change whenever an election is held. Normally based on the party in power.
Basic beliefs- common things like the safety and well-being of citizens
Government sets laws and regulations that keep society in check, provides and funds schools, healthcare, infrastructure, and jobs
Overseas and controls society and creates a community that better serves our needs
It is the most important because it has power over other social institutions, and can regulate such institutions to improve society.
Jail and Law enforcement
Police officers, lawyers, judges and juries, etc
Core beliefs- innocent until proven guilty, you have rights as citizens, retribution and rehabilitation, unbiased and fair trial, professionalism
Protects society, serves community, keeps us safe
Why is it the most important because we are kept safe and keeps order in society
How is healthcare a social institution?
Provincial and territorial governments for the management and organization of the healthcare system
Core beliefs- enhance quality of life, addressing the needs of patients at the community level
Provides care and education to help protect society
Healthcare helps maintain our physical and mental well-being
Provides therapy, medication, and other health services
Most important because it is a necessity for our well-being
What is socialization?
The process of learning about behaviour patterns, skills, and values of the social world
What are the elements of socialization?
Includes thing such as:
Basic skills
Socially accepted goals (for example, employment, marriage, etc)- think of rites of passages how is it linked?
Roles and Behaviours (For example, how to act in specific condition)
What are the types of socialization?
Primary Socialization
Secondary Socialization
Anticipatory Socialization
Resocialization
What is Primary Socialization?
Learning the basic skills needed to survive in a society
Hygiene, Eating w/ utensils, language use, literacy, dressing appropriately
What is Secondary Socialization?
Learning appropriate behaviours and learning how to behave in group situations (how to approach & talk to people; how to behave in school, place of worship or work; how to behave in public places (mall, park)
