What are the types of socialization?
Primary socialization, secondary socialization, anticipatory socialization, re-socialization, and gender socialization
Define socialization
The process of creating an individualβs personality through the explanation and demonstration of the necessary behaviors, skills and habits required for interacting within their own society. Process continues from birth to death
Describe primary socialization
Basis for all future socialization
Originates from family
Helps learn values attitudes and actions of a culture
Describe secondary socialization
Behavior determined by socializing agents other than family.
Occurs outside the home; situation based
Ex. Friends, teachers
Define anticipatory socialization
Practicing for future positions or social relationships
Ex. Co ops, living together before marriage
Define re-socialization
Replacing former behavior with a new one
Occurs many times throughout life
Ex. New relationship, new school
Define gender socialization
Socialization is defined by gender roles
Learn attitudes/ behavior considered appropriate for gender
