Critical of state as they believe it allows the facilitation of the exploitative nature of capitalism.

Too flawed and corrupt, a revolution would be the only option as capitalism has gone to far to be reformed.

Marx + Engels believe in a revolution which would turn the proleteriat into a workers communist state.
Luxemburg disagreed and believed a spontaneous revolution for a socialist state with free speech and democratic elections would be better.
What did the revisionists socialists agree on about the state?
The state can successfully remodel society without a revolution. This can lead to equality, cooperation, and community.
What did the Social Democrats believe in terms of the state?
The state should be managed by ‘meritocratic managers’ and ‘classless technocrats’.
What did the Democratic Socialists believe in terms of the state?
The state should be used to create a socialist society via parliamentary democracy achieved through universal suffrage and would be a gradual process.
What did third way socialists believe in terms of the state?
They believe that the state should invest in social investments and infrastructure but refrain from economic and social engineering. They also promoted a model which rejected the centralised state.
How did the third way socialists disagree with the rest in terms of the state?
They did not agree that through either a gradual or shock transition that the state should be replaced in its entirety by a socialist state. They are also more tolerant of the state.
What are some agreements that third way socialists have with the rest in terms of the state?
Agreed that the state should play a role in promoting equality, cooperation and community.
