Canada Pension Plan
A monthly, taxable benefit that replaces part of your income when you retire.
Capitalism
An economic and political system in which a country’s trade and industry are controlled by private owners for profit, rather than by the state.
CCF
The Co-operative Commonwealth Federation was a social-democratic and democratic socialist political party in Canada.
Chartism
A working-class male suffrage movement for political reform in Britain that existed from 1838 to 1857.
Collective Agreement
A written contract negotiated through collective bargaining for employees by one or more trade unions with the management of a company that regulates the terms and conditions of employees at work.
Collective Bargaining
A process of negotiation between employers and a group of employees aimed at agreements to regulate working salaries, working conditions, benefits, and other aspects of workers’ compensation and rights for workers.
Collective Interest
An interest that is shared by every member of a group in virtue of being a member of that group.
Common Good
The benefit or interests of all.
Co-operation
The process of working together to the same end.
Co-operative
Involving mutual assistance in working toward a common goal. A member owned business with at least 5 members, all of whom have equal voting.
Cradle-to-Grave
Extending throughout one’s life, from birth to death: a cradle-to-grave system of healthcare.
Crown Corporation
A corporation owned by the federal or provincial government.
Democratic Socialism
A political philosophy supporting political democracy within a socially owned economy, with a particular emphasis on economic democracy.
Economic Equality
Fairness in economics, particularly in regard to taxation or welfare economics.
Egalitarianism
The ideology that all people are equal and deserve equal rights and opportunities.
Employment Insurance
A federal insurance program that provides benefits to eligible unemployed people.
Feminism
The advocacy of women’s rights on the basis of the equality of the sexes.
Harm Principle
The actions of individuals should only be limited to prevent harm to other individuals.
Humanitarianism
The promotion of human welfare.
Labour Code
Consolidate certain statutes respecting labour. The objective of the Code is to facilitate production by controlling strikes & lockouts, occupational safety and health, and some employment standards.
Labour Legislation
Mediates the relationship between workers, employing entities, trade unions and the government.
Labour Relations
The relationship between the management of a company or organization and its workforce.
Labour Union
An organized association of workers, often in a trade or profession, formed to protect and further their rights and interests.
