Idea of merit of cooperation - when workers have a state in society they want to make it better.
Third Way - Giddens
We need to tried to create competition and harness that towards community to counterbalance disparities created by capitalism
Do socialists agree on the state?
Agree:
Social democracy and third way to some extent- agree on state intervention to create equality of outcome. Agree state should address inequalities.
Capitalism is not a fair economic system
Disagree:
Third way - less state intervention
Social democracy - Crosland - 100% about state intervention, profit shouldn’t be given to individuals but reinvested into the economy.
Revolutionary - overthrow the state
Revolutionary - Karl - capitalism is inherently bad
Third way - willing to work with capitalism
Social democracy - should manage capitalism - free market
To what extent do socialists agree over the economy?
Social democracy: Crosland talks about regulating capitalism - can be some profits in society.
Giddens agreed as there’s much more mobility in society.
Abandonment of what Karl Marx and Luxemburg argued - idea of equal society isn’t plausible or possible when we’re looking at capitalism as capitalism exists to create inequalities.
Every single strand of socialism believes capitalism leads to inequality and that’s a bad thing.
