Define culture
All the things that are learned and shared by a society or group and then transmitted through generations.
What does culture include?
Things a society regards as important such as customs, traditions, language, skills, knowledge, beliefs, norms and values.
What are values?
General principles and goals. They tell us what is good and what to aim for in life.
What are norms?
Specific rules that govern behaviour in certain situations.
What is a subculture?
A group that differ from the mainstream culture in terms of their norms and values.
Learning the norms and values of society is known as what?
Socialisation
What is primary socialisation?
Socialisation that takes place in the early years of life, largely within the family. We normally learn language, basic skills, and norms.
What is secondary socialisation?
Socialisation that takes place later, like at school or in wider society.
