Socialisation
the process by which we learn about a way of life and the norms and values of our society
primary socialisation
during the early years of life, their first experience of socialisation
Agents of socialisation
the institutions which socialise us - they influence the social behaviour of individuals throughout their lifetime .

Norms
Expected patterns of behaviour in society - how most people act
Values
Beliefs and ideas that are accepted by the majority of people in society e.g. we believe in being polite
Nature
refers to the innate qualities like human nature or genetics
Nurture
refers to care given to children by parents or more broadly, environment influences such as media and marketing
Family
how the family socialises us
Parsons
says the function of the family is to socialise the young
Dennis and Erdos
says fatherless children are less likely to be successfully socialised into the culture of discipline and comprimise - therefore less likely to be successful parents themselves
Chapman (feminists)
children are given gender stereotypical chores in the house to teach what is gender appropriate
williams (feminists)
worked for 6 weeks at a large discount retailer, six weeks at a small boutique retailer she found that parents were using the experience of toy buying to teach their children how to operate in a consumer society.

says we can’t even say what continues a family anymore, in our past modern world it is quite ambigiuos
