Representation
Level of government responsible for matters that concern the whole country
Federal government
A person who contributes to the society in which he or she lives; the person may be born in the country or may apply if he or she moves into the country from another country
Citizen
Concerns or problems that affect a community
Issues
What someone believes, but can’t be proved to be right or wrong
Opinion
A statement that can be proven to be true
Fact
People who share the same government and the same rules and laws
Society
An action that is not fair
Injustice
Examples may include: schools, hospitals, libraries and police

The supreme or most important law of the land

Allows citizens to vote and to run for office

Treating everyone the same regardless of factors such as gender, race or religion

A place where citizens would debate, listen, discuss and vote

Rulers who seize power and govern in a harsh and cruel way
Tyrants
Person who brings a complaint about another person to court
Plaintiff
A long poem that tells a story, usually about a legendary hero
Epic
A large group of families who are related to one another
Clan
A map that provides information about features of land like rivers, mountains, and land elevation
Physical map
A map that tells the location of countries and cities
Political map
People with special abilities or interests in public affairs, selected to join the Grand Council by the chiefs

A shared belief system that often includes the same language, culture, values and attitudes

A map that tells what an area was like in the past

Name of an organization that works for world peace
United Nations
Successive descendants in a family, such as grandparents, parents and children.
Generations
A region that has its own local government
Municipal area
Group of concerned citizens and members of government that give advice on a council.

Laws that are passed by a local government

People hired to run or work in government departments.
Civil servants
Examples may include seniors facilities, public transportation, libraries, fire protection and roads

The top elected official, selected by council members by a Métis government
Chairperson
A meeting place where public discussions occur
Forum
A councillor elected as chief elected officer by a council in a rural area
Reece
To identify a person as a possible candidate for an elected position
Nominate
The top elected official, elected by voters in a First Nations community
Chief
A person who is responsible for running the schools in a jurisdication
Superintendent
A group of elected representatives who make decisions for a local area
Council
A person who serves on a school board
Trustee
A rural area that has its own local government
Municipal district
Money collected from people who own property such as houses, businesses, and land in the community
Taxes
The top elected official, elected by voters in an urban area
Mayor
The money raised by a local government through taxes
Revenue
A list of items that shows how much money will be spent on each item.
Budget
A person elected to local government
Councillor
A written request that contains the signatures of people who support its content.
Petition
Divisions of local government that provide various kinds of services to the community
Civil servants
An idea or proposal discussed and voted on at a meeting
Motion
Money spent by local governments
Expenditures
A piece of paper used for voting that lists the names of the candidates

An organization made up of people who have similar ideas about how to govern
Political party
The queen’s representative in Alberta, who is appointed to sign all bills passed by the Legislative Assembly and perform other duties
Lieutenant Governor
An elected representative who is in charge of a provincial government department and who is a member of the Cabinet
Cabinet Minister
A point of view expressed by a group of people who share the same opinion
