what is a social survey?
a systematic collection of the same type of data from a fairly large number of people. this is usually collected by questionnaires and structured interviews.
why would a social survey be conducted?
- to find out facts about the population e.g health and illness

*to test ‘hypothesis’
what are the three examples of social survey approaches?
- the census
*british household panel survey
*crime survey for England and Wales
what is the census?
a questionnaire carried out buy the office for national statistics (ONS) every 10 years. it is a legal requirement to complete and is sent to every household in the UK. it gathers information about the population e.g age and religion
what is the British household panel survey?
it is a survey for social and economic research. a sample of households was selected and first interviewed in 1991 and have been followed annually and interviewed. questions asked regard demographics income and employment participation.
what is the British crime survey?
commissioned by the ONS and monitors the extent of crime in England and Wales. it is a face to face survey and is used by the government to evaluate and Develop crime reduction policies by asking questions based on the nature of crime, types of crime and victimisation
