Ruler and leader of the Mongols who started the empire and continued to conquer lands throughout his lifetime. He was known for his cruel and brutal acts, leaving the empire up to his sons (and grandson) to carry on.
Genghis Khan
People who did not live in one spot. They lived in tents that could be picked up and moved easily. Often times, Mongols followed their herds of animals.
Nomad
The tent-like structures used by the Mongols because they were portable, yet large enough to live in and be comfortable. This was a round structure, typically covered by felt or animal skins.
Yurts
Rolling and grassy plains that the Mongols traveled across. Many of these can be found from the Black Sea through northern China.
Steppes
The unified regions that were broke apart by the Mongols. China and Korea reverted back to this system later in time.
Dynasty
- The Mongols were most well known for their ability to wage war and conquer lands. They were constantly on the move and had excellent and accurate archery skills. 2. The Mongols were also known for their ability to ride on horseback. They started riding at a very young age and continued throughout their life.
Two Characteristics
The original source of information or a first-hand recording of an event, time period, account, etc.
Primary source
A series of trade routes that connected Asia and Europe. These stretched for thousands of miles and not only allowed goods to be traded but cultures and ideas such as Buddhism and Christianity to be spread.
Silk Road
The Mongols helped to protect the Silk Road and encouraged the movement or certain products and ideas. Silk, porcelain, gunpower and the compass were some of the products the Mongols used and brought West to Europe.
Goods traded
The Mongols helped strengthen trade by transporting certain goods OUT of their territory. Example: Porcelain from China
Export
Certain goods along the Silk Road were in high demand and were brought IN to Mongol territory. Example: Wool from Rome
Import
Italian explorer who traveled the Silk Road to learn about different people and cultures. He interacted with the Mongols and shared many new ideas when he returned to Europe.
Marco Polo
Merchants traveled in large groups along the Silk Road. These groups travelled with hundreds of camels at a time and often had armed guards for protection.
