Social Studies Unit Test : Constitution Flashcards

Unit Test

1
Q

Why did George Mason and the anti federalists not approve the constitution.

A

The anti-federalist position was simple; there
were few restrictions on the national government to protect the
rights of individual citizens, and plus compared to the Article of Confederation, the Constitution appeared diminishing and undermining to the rights and freedoms of individual citizens. They believed that the new national government would become too powerful and abusive, similar to what parliament did before the American revolution. The anti-federalists found it only logical logical that the
Constitution of a new government should include rights deemed to Americans. In addition, George Mason’s refusal to sign the document added pressure to Congress which helped address the concerns..
