Enlightenment
A movement of ideas that occurred in Europe between 1680 and 1790. Attempted to apply reason to understand, explain and even change the world. Focused on individualism. Enlightenment thinkers include John Locke, Adam Smith, Jean-Jacques Rousseau, Emmanuel Kant and many others. Focused on individual power rather than government power.
INDUSTRIAL REVOLUTION
Transition from a mostly agricultural nation to a manufacturing nation. This took place from about 1760 to sometime between 1820 and 1840. Many people moved from rural locations to the cities for work.
Urbanization
A result of industrialization. People moved from rural areas to cities in order to be closer to factories.
Questions regarding authenticity or validity
With these questions always select answers that are not biased by any one person such as a governor or elected official. ALWAYS verify accuracy of information.
Tariff
Taxes on imports
Imports
bring (goods or services) into a country from abroad for sale.
Exports
send (goods or services) to another country for sale.
Monopoly
When one company completely dominates an industry.
Ex: Wal Mart, McDonalds
Antitrust Laws
antitrust law is a collection of federal and state government laws that regulates the conduct and organization of business corporations, generally to promote competition for the benefit of consumers. (The concept is called competition law in other English-speaking countries.)
Democracy
a system of government by the whole population or all the eligible members of a state, typically through elected representatives.
Annexation
forcible acquisition of one state’s territory by another state and is generally held to be an illegal act.
Homestead Act
Westward expansion of people for land. Northerners who wanted individual farmers to own and operate their own farms, as opposed to Southern slave-owners who wanted to buy up large tracts of land and use slave labor, thereby shutting out free white farmers.
Great Depression
The Great Depression was a severe worldwide economic depression that took place mostly during the 1930s, beginning in the United States.
Immigration to America
Most of these questions will be short answer. People generally immigrate to America for better jobs, better education and to escape poverty. America is believed to provide a better standard of living.
Women’s Suffrage
Women’s suffrage is the right of women to vote in elections. Beginning in the late 19th century, besides women working for broad-based economic and political equality and for social reforms, women sought to change voting laws to allow them to vote.
