Democracy
Any form of government in which democracy belongs to the people.
Direct Democracy
Where people directly vote on government decisions.
Representative Democracy
Representatives in government vote on behalf of the people they represent.
Republic
Any type of representative democracy where the people have a say in the executive branch.
Parliamentary Democracy
Where the executive branch gets its power from and is held accountable to a legislature.
Presidential Democracy
Where the executive branch exists separately from the legislature.
Autocracy
Government in which only one person holds power.
Monarchy
The person comes to power through inheritance from a parent or another relative.
Dictatorships
The person comes to power by taking it, often through a military takeover.
Oligarchy
A government in which the power is held by just a few people.
Aristocracy
Ruled by the nobility, or a small class of privileged people who claim higher status.
Plutocracy
Ruled by the wealthy.
Stratocracy
Ruled by military leaders
Theocracy
Ruled by religious leaders
Kleptocracy
A government in which those in power are corrupt.
