Emperors had no written rule about who was to take over the throne. Some were related and some weren't When Marcus Aurelius died the system changed - his son Commundus took over and was hated so his body guards strangled him Praetorian guard sold the throne to the highest bidder For 100 years legions fought to put their own emperor During this time Rome had 37 emperors. Most were murdered
