What does a compass rose tell you?
Tells us directions on a map. For example, North, East, South, and
West
What is a map key or legend?
Tells you what those pictures mean on the map
What does absolute location tell you?
Tells us an exact location. For example, your address
What does relative location tell you?
tells us location compared to something us For example, down the
street from the school on the left
What are the countries in North America?
The countries in North America are Canada, United States, and Mexico
What is a landform?
a word that describes a form of land
What are the types of landforms in North America?
Mountains, Hills, Valleys, Plains, Plateaus,
Deserts
What are laws?
rules in our community that keep us safe
What is an election?
when we vote for a leader in local, state, or federal government
What is a mayor?
The mayor is the leader of our local government and works with city
council
The city government is in charge of what?
City government is in charge of local issues. They make local rules and laws.
They also are in charge of libraries, local roads, local parks, local
transportation, local safety, and sanitation.
What is the governor?
The governor is the leader of our state government and works with state
legislators.
What is state government in charge of?
State governments are in charge of state issues. They create state laws
and manage the state budget. They are also in charge of state parks, state
highways, state safety, colleges/universities, and hospitals.
What are the three branches of government?
Legislative, Executive, and Judicial
What do you know about the executive branch?
The leader of the executive branch is the president
The president enforces the laws and decides who leads cabinet and
agencies.
We vote for the president every 4 years.
The president lives in the White House.
The president is in charge of the armed forces.
Laws can be signed or vetoed.
What do you know about the legislative branch?
Consists of congress which is made up of the House of Representatives
and Senate.
Representatives are based on state populations and each state elects two
senators
They work in the capitol building.
Creates laws for the country
Approves people that the President nominates
What do you know about the judicial branch?
The nine Supreme Court judges make up the Judicial branch.
They decide if laws are fair or if they should be changed.
They work in the Supreme Court building.
Supreme court judges are nominated by the president and approved by the
Senate.
