What is a Glacier
A large mass of ice that moves very slowly
What is an ocean
A large body of salt water which surrounds a continent
What is a bay
A body of water partially enclosed by land, with a wide opening to the sea or ocean
What is a Fjord
A long narrow inlet with high steep banks
What is a sea
A body of salt water smaller than a ocean
What is a river
A large natural stream of fresh water, lowering in a channel to the ocean
What is a gulf
A body of water nearly surrounded by land. Usually larger than a bay but not always
What is a canal
A man made waterway with straight banks
What is a lake
A body of water completely surrounded by land
What is a strait
A narrow passage of water that connects two larger bodies of water
What is a harbor
A body of water protected by ships and where ships seek shelter. Can be natural or man made
What is a source of the river
The place where the river begins in the highlands
What is the mouth of the river
Place where the river empties itself into a larger body of water
What is the tributary of the river
A branch of a river
What is upstream in a river
Direction from the mouth to the source of a river. You are going against the flow of the river
What is downstream in a river
Direction in which a river flows from the source to the mouth
What is the solar system
A group of planets which orbit the sun
How many planets are in the solar system
There are 8 planets
Where is the solar system located
In a galaxy called the Milky Way which is located in a cluster of about 20 galaxies called the local group which is just one of the countless clusters in the universe
What does a galaxy consist of
Dust, Gas, and billions of stars
What is the distance across the solar system measured in
Astronomical Units
Why was the light years created
It was created to measure distance to the stars and galaxies beyond the Milky Way
What is a light years equal to
To the distance light can travel in an year
Light travels at _______ Miles per second
186,000
What is a asteroid
Lumps of rocks varying in size
What is a comet
Frozen balls of gas that glow when approaching the sun
What is a meteoroid
Small particles which burn up when they enter the atmosphere
What do planets in the solar system have in common
- Each planet travels in a path around the sun (Revolution)
- They turn on an axis (Rotation)
- They are tilted on its axis
What differences do planets in the solar system have
- They are different sizes
- They rotate at different speeds
- They have different temperatures
- They have different distances from the sun
What is Rotation
The spinning or the earth on its axis once every 24 hrs
Why does day and night occur
Because the earth is a sphere only half of it will face the sun at any given time (daytime). The half away from the sun is darkness or nighttime
Which direction does the earth spin
West to east
What is a Revolution
The movement of the earth in a path or orbit around the sun once every 3651/4 days
How do seasons happen
As the earth revolves around the sun the Suns rays strike the earth at different angles causing the seasons
When is the spring equinox
March 21st
When is the summer solstice
June 21st
When is the winter solstice
December 21st
When is the autumn equinox
September 23rd
What does solstice mean
They mark the time when the sun reaches its highest or lowest point in the sky. This gives us the longest day and night
What does equinox
Mark the times when the sun is at the equator giving equal lengths of night and day
What are the effects of Revolution
- Varying lengths of day and night
- The 4 seasons
- Changed in latitude of the sun
What are the effects of Rotation
- Day and night
- 15 degrees difference in longitude every hour( caculation of time)
- Deflection of winds and ocean currents
- The daily rising and falling of tides
What is weather
The condition of the atmosphere at a particular place and time
What is climate
The average condition of the weather of a place overtime
What is temperature
How hot or cold the air is
What is precipitation
Water that falls from the atmosphere to the ground in any form( rain, snow, hail)
What is wind speed
How fast the air is moving
What is wind direction
Where the air is going.
How are winds named
Winds are named from thier point of origin
What is humidity
The amount of moisture in the air
What is air pressure
The weight of the air pressing on the earths surface
What are clouds
Droplets of water which condenses around dusts. This includes the amount and type of clouds
What is sunshine
The amount of hours the sun shines on the earths surface
What are the two most important weather elements
Temperature and rainfall
How many polar regions are there and what is the temperature like
There are 2 and it is always cold
How many equatorial regions are there and what is the temperature like
There is one and it is always hot
How many Tropical regions are there and what is the temperature like
There are 2 and they are hot with distinct features
How many temperate regions are there and what is the temperature like
There are 2 and it has hot summers and cold winters
How many Subtropical regions are there and what is the temperature like
There are 2 and it is between temperate and tropical zones
What is it like in the polar regions
There is daylight for long periods during summer but the Sun rays are never strong enough to make it warm so that there is always ice and snow
What is the like in the equatorial regions
Solar radiation is always close the maximum so it never gets cool
Between the polar and Equatorial regions there are hot and cold seasons. The temperate regions is divided into __________
- A warm temperate zone like the southern US where the winters are not too severe
- A cold temperate zone where is the winters are long and severe
What are winds
A wind is a moving mass of air
What are prevailing winds
A wind that blows constantly over a particular place
What are the factors that contribute to the amount of rainfall a place receives
Distance from the sun-Coastal areas usually receive more rain than inland areas
The height of the land above sea level- as air rises the temperature drops and rainfall Increases so Montanus areas are wetter than low land areas
Onshore winds- humidity comes in the wind so if the air has crossed a ocean it is wetter than if it would cross land
What are the types of wind systems
- Trade winds
- The westerlies
- The monsoon
- The polar winds
What are the instrument and units for
Humidity, Percepertation, Temperature, Air pressure, Wind speed, Wind direction, Cloud Cover, Sunshine,
- Hygrometer- percentage
- Rain gauge- inches mm
- Thermometer-degrees
- Barometer-Milibars
- Anemometer-knots,mph,compass
- Wind vain- “ “
- Eye estimation- Oktas

What is the climate of the Bahamas
Tropical Marine
What 2 systems develope before turning into a hurricane
Tropical storm and tropical depression
What is a hurricane
A hurricane is a tropical storm that rotates counter clockwise and has a wind speed of over 74 miles per hour
