Cold War
Conformity
act of matching attitudes, beliefs, and behaviors to group norms, politics and being like-minded.
Suburbia
part of a town or city focusing it’s attention on residential living through mass housing areas.
Consumerism
economic ideal encouraging the collection if goods and services in massive amounts.
Welfare
Government led programs that provide financial or other aid to individuals/groups who are in need of assistance
Means of Production:
Land, labor and facilities that can be used to produce products in a country
Managed either by individuals or the government
Soviet Union (USSR)
Socialist state starting in Russia encompassing a large territory across Eastern Europe and Asia from 1922 to 1991.
Totalitarian dictatorship
A form of government where one political party or figure asserts total control over a country
Ex: Joseph Stalin and the USSR
Iron Curtain
Symbolic and physical boundary that separated the democratic nations of Western Europe from the countries of Eastern and Central Europe under USSR control
Satellite states:
Countries that are technically independent but are controlled or influenced by another country
Control can be political, economic or military
Espionage
Practice of spying or of using spies by governments to obtain political/military information.
MGB/KGB
USSR intelligence agency and secret police force
CIA
(Central Intelligence Agency) Civilian foreign intelligence service of the United States.
Manhattan Project:
America’s nuclear weapons research program credited for creating the first Atomic Bomb
Proxy War
war fought b/w groups or smaller countries that each represent the interests of the larger powers.
Korean War
first “hot” war of the cold war. Actual fighting with troops face to face.
