What is Race and ethnicity
- Race is the physical characteristics e.g colour of eyes, hair, skin etc
- Ethnicity is the culture and customs
What is Religion
- Religion is not dependent on the race or ethnicity
- A set of believes and practices ( which gods they worship)
What is socio-economic status
- Economic status shared by a group of people
- What type of housing, food and circles of friends that you have
People of high SES usually play golf. Soccer is a common sport played by all SES. - Occupation, income, education, ownership of wealth can determine ones SES.
What is Nationality
- People live together in a particular geographical area and have common lifestyle choices
- Share common history, traditions, common practices, common language.
What is social mobility
The ability for an individual to move from one economic status to another, whether higher or lower.
Benefits of living in a diverse society
- Socio- cultural aspect
Diverse society provides many opportunities to interact & learn from others from diff countries & cultures → benefit from such interactions → may result in fusion between local cultures & foreign idea - Socio- economic aspect
Share knowledge with each other
strengthen research competencies & collaborations with Sʼporeans who can learn much from them * [e.g. Under Biomedical Research Council BMRC, world-renowned scientists move to SG, collaborate with Sʼporeans, to continue their research → positive outcome: discovery of the H1N1 flu vaccine.
Disadvantages of living in a diverse society
Socio-cultural consequences
- increase of conflicts between difference races –> beliefs and ways of life is different resulting in more misunderstanding.
e.g in 2010, a Christian pastor made a negative remark on Buddhism.
- jump to conclusions and make wrong assumptions.
Socio- economic aspect:
- competition for resources
- less jobs (view foreigners as a threat)
- social mobility (income gap increases people are afraid that they are unable to move up a SES)
