The Legislative Branch
Constituents
People represented by others in congress.
Majority Party
In both the House of Representatives and the Senates, the political parties more than half the members belong to.
Minority Party
In both the House of Representatives and the Senate, the political parties less than half the members belong to.
Committee
A small group of representatives or senators
Bill
A proposed law
Amendment
Addition or change to a document
Veto
When the president rejects or goes against a decision made by lawmakers.
Census
A count of people in each state taken every 10 years.
Impeach
Accuse a politician of taking bribes, treason, or other crimes.
Joint resolutions
Formal statements passed by both houses of congress.
Special-Interest
groups
Organizations of people with a common cause who try to influence the governments decisions.
Riders
Completely unrelated amendments to be added to the bill.
Filibuster
Senators will talk for many hours straight until the bill’s sponcer decides to suspend it.
Cloture
Limits the debate to one hour per senate when discussing a bill.
Voice vote
Members say “AYE” aloud if they are in favor of the bill.
Role-call vote
As each senators name is called they say “AYE” or “NO”
Pocket veto
If the president vetos the bill congress has one more chance to save it.
Override
Reverse or overturn something.
