What does Eunomia mean?
Eunomia means the quality of society ‘good order’.
In Sparta, there was thought to be a good sense of Eunomia in their communal life, though it evolved over time.
Who are the Sparties?
Sparties, or ‘Homoioi’, are only citizens of Sparta who had to be 30 years old and are characterized by self-discipline and ethos towards their state.
What is the role of Sparties in society?
All members of Sparties were in the military, and underage Sparties were in Agoge education school. They had no economic significance besides military.
What are Perioikoi?
Perioikoi are craftsmen, traders, and manufacturers for the Spartan economy, living in their own regions in Laconia.
What protection do Perioikoi have?
Perioikoi had protection from the Spartan army for their economic work. If army numbers were low, they could join the army.
Herodotos says, ‘Perioikoi could be conscripted into the army.’
What is the role of Helots?
Helots are responsible for agriculture and must do what their master, usually a Homoioi, says.
How are Helots treated?
Helots are treated poorly and could be conscripted.
Plutarch says, ‘They were made to be deliberately drunk by the Homoioi to humiliate them and emphasise their social standing.’
What does Inferior mean in Spartan society?
Inferior refers to those not considered a part of Spartan traditional social standing.
What are Partheniai?
Partheniai are children of unmarried Spartans, only ‘PART’ Spartan.
What are Mothakes?
Mothakes are non-Spartan boys adopted into the Agoge education system.
‘MOT’ sounds like NOT, not Spartan.
What are Neodamodeis?
Neodamodeis are those freed from slavery through their conscription and completion of war.
‘NEO’ means new Spartan.
What are Hypomeiones?
Hypomeiones are Spartiates stripped of citizenship for being a coward.
‘HYPO’ sounds like hypocrite.
