Who were the Perioeci?
They were traders and craftsmen of materials such as clothing, shoes, furniture, storage pots, metalwork, while communities living near the coast engaged in fishing and shipbuilding.
What else were Perioeci also expected to do?
Expected to serve as soldiers alongside Spartiates during war times.
What was the political status of Perioeci?
Self-governing communities, where they had local citizenship. However, they were allowed no role or say in Spartan government.
How much the Helots outnumber the Spartiates by?
At least 10:1.
What was the main role of Helots?
To work on the Spartan farms, while helot women did the domestic work required in a household - a good nurse for babies.
What did helots have to supply their master with?
A fixed amount of produce annually.
What were helots allowed to do with surplus produce?
Keep it or make a profit from it.
When were helots to act as servants?
In times of war.
What was it legal to do to a helot?
Kill a helot at any time.
How were helots humiliated?
Being forced to sing ridiculous songs, to dress up in animal skins, and to receive public beatings.
