What is meant by the ‘cycle of poverty’?
People from the poorest section of society
are socialised within the subculture of
poverty. As a result they are unable to break free from poverty
What is intra-genrational social mobility?
Someone changing social class within their own lifetime (e.g. a promotion)
What is inter-generational social mobility?
changes in social class across generations, comparing parents to their children
What is class de-alignment?
Weakening of the links between social class
and voting behaviour.

The process by which immigrants abandon
their own culture and adapt their behaviour to
fit the norms and values of the dominant
culture

Deprivation experienced in
neighbourhoods that are ugly, dirty,
unsafe
What is meant by ‘false-class consciousness’?
Subordinate groups (proletariat) do not realise that they are being exploited when asserting towards goals which do not benefit them

positive or negative outcomes throughout life
What is absolute poverty?
The state of not having the basic necessities n order to have a fairly healthy existence (such as food, shelter, and clothing)
What is the ‘poverty trap’?
Stuck in poverty and unable to get out because of certain things such as the inability to get to cheaper food shops so have to keep paying for expensive food
