Social Security - Family Benefit Flashcards
How is the “family maximum” for SS benefits calculated?
Using the following “bend points”:
150% of the first $980 of the primary’s PIA, plus
272% of the PIA over $980 and through $1,415, plus
134% of the PIA from $1,415 through $1,845, plus
175% of the the PIA over $1,845
What is the “Family Maximum” with regard to SS?
For primaries who are retired, disabled, or deceased, family dependent family members may qualify for benefits - Spouse, children, step children, parents, grand parents
The maximum of all benefits paid in a family based on one primary’s PIA typically can’t exceed 150 to 188%.
How does having a dependent child impact the spouse’s eligibility for benefits on the record of the primary who is retired or disabled?
If the dependent child is under 16, then the normal minimum age of 62 for claiming a spousal benefit is waived. Once the dependent child reaches age 16, then the spouse’s benefit is discontinued (until she reclaims again at age 62 or later). Note that the child’s benefit would continue until age 18 (or 19 if unmarried and still in high school).
T or F - Individual family benefits are paid by separate deposits to each beneficiaries account?
True. Applies to both spousal and dependent business (exceptions?)
When does the family maximum come into play?
Only when there are multiple recipients from one person’s SS work record. For instance a breadwinner whose spouse and children under 18.
